Police Urge to Stay off Lakes and Ponds

Although we are heading into the middle of January, Halifax Police are remindng residents to stay off lakes and ponds.

The surface ice is very thin and there is open water in many areas.

The municipalities ice thickness testing program has not even begun yet because it’s not safe for staff.

When testing does resume this winter season, the guide found online will list the body of water, specific location, the ice thickness and date it was checked.

Police urge caution and ask the public to avoid recreational activities on any ice, just yet.

The guide can be found at https://www.halifax.ca/parks-recreation/programs-activities/skating/ice-thickness.
