3,500 government employees returning to office

Commuters in Halifax will experience increased congestion as approximately 3,500 provincial government employees return to the office full-time starting October 15.

This decision impacts non-union workers who have been able to work remotely for years under the FlexNS program, initiated in 2015.

Many employees had developed routines that included several days of remote work each week, and the sudden requirement to return to the office has raised questions about the reasoning behind this change.

Internal communications from the government indicate that the aim is to support a “culture of service excellence.” While there may be some flexibility for individual cases, officials have stated that exceptions will be rare and assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Notably, this directive does not apply to the thousands of unionized government employees in Halifax, and any potential changes for them would be subject to negotiation.
