Halifax wants to become a Bee City!
The Bee City Program is a conservation initiative that aims at protecting pollinators like bees, birds and butterflies who are currently facing challenges with climate change and habitat loss.
However, these pollinators play a vital role in plant health and keeping a balance in the ecosystem.
If Halifax gets Bee City status, to keep it, our city must educate the public about pollinator importance, improve habitats and celebrate with National Pollinator Week.
According to HRM, we already have ongoing initiatives that align with the Bee City program, such as encouraging residents to plant native pollinator species in boulevard gardens, implementing naturalization pilot projects in parks, promoting community gardens, and accommodating beekeeping.
For Halifax to keep Bee City status, program partners must annually report progress and participate in National Pollinator Week, accompanied by an annual fee based on population size, which would be $750 per year for the municipality.
Bee City status has already been granted to several organizations, businesses and schools across Canada.
