More than 4,000 housing units could be coming to the North End of Halifax including 11 highrises, with one that would be 52 stories high.
It would be the tallest building in the city.
Halifax Council is considering this proposal for the area called the Young Street Lands Future Growth Node that encompasses Young, Robie, Almon and Windsor.
They are known as the Young Street Lands.
According to Councillor Kathryn Morse, it would be developed in stages over 25 years. When completed it could have a population of 10,000.

- Session one: 9-11:30 a.m.
- Session two: 2 – 4:30 p.m.
- Session three: 6:30 – 9 p.m.
Paul Card, the Board Chair with the Halifax Forum Community Association, says it’s something they’ve been speaking to Council about for about 14 years.
“The whole area of the Young Street districts in the future growth node was planned as part of this large influx of people,” says Card.
He says from a Halifax Forum perspective, having a community and recreation space in that area is more important than it’s ever been.
“Fortunately, enough councillors believe that to be true,” explains Card. “The forum, an existing important facility and even more important going forward.”
The Forum has been a staple in the city for nearly 100 years.
It is in the process of getting redeveloped; a project that will cost about $120 million. It includes two new ice surfaces the size of NHL rinks as well as a modern community centre.
Card says they now have renderings on their Facebook page, with demolition scheduled for this time next year.
