Charges laid in Halifax grandparents scheme

Police have laid charges in relation to a scam in Halifax, involving seniors.

In each of the five cases, the victim received a call from someone claiming a loved one was in jail, then another call from someone else, who told the victim they needed to pay money to get them released.

In some cases, a third person picked the money up in person, and two of those instances that person identified themselves as a police officer.

A 23-year-old man will appear in court at a later date facing a slew of charges including:

  • Fraud over $5000 (x5)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 (x5)
  • Use/possession of stolen credit card
  • Participate in criminal organization
  • Conspiracy to commit fraud

Police remind citizens that if you receive a call like this, that it is a scam.

Call police at 902-490-5016 if you’ve lost money or your identity has been compromised as the result of a scam. You can report a scam where you haven’t been a victim to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, or call 1-888-495-8501.
