Police have laid charges in relation to a scam in Halifax, involving seniors.
In each of the five cases, the victim received a call from someone claiming a loved one was in jail, then another call from someone else, who told the victim they needed to pay money to get them released.
In some cases, a third person picked the money up in person, and two of those instances that person identified themselves as a police officer.
A 23-year-old man will appear in court at a later date facing a slew of charges including:
- Fraud over $5000 (x5)
- Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 (x5)
- Use/possession of stolen credit card
- Participate in criminal organization
- Conspiracy to commit fraud
Police remind citizens that if you receive a call like this, that it is a scam.
