The Minister of Community Services, Trevor Boudreau says there are risks to being outside, including fires.
His comments come after HRM’s decision to close five out of 11 tent encampments around the city this week.
“There are challenges. So, everybody is individual, and I think HRM did a pretty good job outlining that there are people who say ‘no’.”
He adds, that could be the first part of the conversation; to find out why they don’t want to leave and understand someone’s needs.
Boudreau adds there are spaces available and more on the way including pallet shelters slated to arrive by the end of February.
They have also increased the amount of space at the Forum up to at least 93 and are in talks about extending the lease at The Bridge.
He said supportive is housing is not a permanent solution but getting people through the continuum.
Geary Street green space, Saunders Park, Victoria Park, Grand Parade and the Correctional Centre Park in Lower Sackville are the encampments to close by February 26th.
