Municipal taxes are about to take a bit of a hike.
Halifax councillors say the rate will jump up 6.3 per cent, after finalizing the number Tuesday, for this year’s budget.
It will mean a little more than $185 extra, per year, on your tax bill.
Councillors had tallied the total to a 6.2 per cent hike but added on another $388,000 for parks and recreation staff, pushing it up to 6.3 per cent.
The extra money will add garbage bins on trails and maintenance for sports fields.
CAO of HRM, Cathy O’Toole says it was about finding a balance between providing services and affordability.
“We know that increasing population, increasing demands for service, inflation and aging infrastructure are going to continue to put demands on the budget.”
The number has dropped down from a proposal of 8 per cent.
That is partly because Halifax no longer has to collect taxes for housing and corrections.
The budget is expected to pass April 23.
