Springfield Lake Beach closed due to toxic algae

Springfield Beach in Sackville is closed because of a blue-green algae bloom.

The city announced the beach would close for recreational use on Tuesday.

Blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, happens naturally in freshwater and might grow when the weather is calm and warm, according to a news release from the Halifax Regional Municipality.

Some types of blue-green algae can produce toxins that are harmful to people and their pets.

The city encourages people to avoid contact with contaminated water and dry and wash themselves if they come into contact with it.

Do not swim in areas with visible blue-green algae or beaches that have been closed because of blue-green algae.

Neither you or your pets should consume the water from contaminated lakes.

No other beaches are currently closed, but there’s a risk advisory in effect for the Albro Lake Beach in Dartmouth.
