Junior and high school students to get free transit pass

Getting around is going to be less costly for thousands of more students.

The province has expanded the Student Transit Pass Pilot Program that will cost $1.8 million between the province and HRM.

It means all 28,000 students in grades seven to 12 at 59 HRCE and Conseil scolaire acadien provincial schools will get a free transit pass.

Minster of Education and Eary Childhood and Development, Becky Druhan says through this program, they are making life more affordable for families.

“The program gives students the independence to travel to and from school, as well as explore and learn about their community. And it promotes sustainability by getting students familiar with the public transit system.”

The passes can be used on buses and ferries from September 5 to June 30.

They will be given out when classes start next week.

The program began in 2021 with four high schools, six junior high schools were added in 2022.
