Bear tranquilized, safe after spotted in Dartmouth Commons tree: DNRR

A bear, spotted in a tree in the Dartmouth Commons Thursday afternoon, is now safe with the Department of Natural Resources and Renewables.

In an email to our newsroom DNRR says as a safety precaution, two schools, Dartmouth High School and Bicentennial, were put under lockdown and the public was asked to avoid the area.

“We are pleased to report that DNRR staff were able to successfully tranquilize the bear. Our thanks to HRP/RCMP for managing onlookers and for allowing DNRR staff to use one of their ladders to get closer to the bear for a safer tranquilizer shot.”

They say the bear landed on a soft mattress, used to break its fall and DNRR will take it so a more “appropriate area”.

They add, as bears get closer to hibernation try to avoid attracting them with food with things like green and garbage bins.
