The fluoride units have been offline since May 2023 at Pockwock and April 2020 at Lake Major.
Repairs at Pockwock are expected to be completed this month, but there is no timeline for Lake Major.
The two facilities serve more than 300,000 residents combined. Halifax Water states that while adding fluoride to drinking water is not required by regulation, it is engaging with its medical officer of health and board members to determine the future of fluoridation.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that helps prevent tooth decay, and its use in drinking water is supported by many health organizations, including Health Canada and the Canadian Dental Association.
