Underground electrical fire sparks major response near Scotiabank Centre

A fire in an underground electrical vault close to the Scotiabank Centre in downtown Halifax had firefighters busy.

Early Monday morning, crews say they arrived to find smoke coming from the vault. They worked alongside Nova Scotia Power crews to isolate the electrical hazard and contain the fire.

During this time, firefighters say power was lost to some areas downtown for several hours, and all crews were able to safely mitigate the situation.

Halifax Professional Fire Fighters wants to remind everyone that electrical fires present significant hazards to their crews, especially when they occur in situations like this one where access is limited and high-voltage equipment might remain energized.

Crews say power is now back on in the area.
