EverWind is exploring data centre opportunities in Point Tupper

A company in Cape Breton focused on clean energy is looking a data centre at its existing industrial site in Point Tupper.

Data centres house technology used to store, process, and manage digital data.

EverWind Fuels says the potential development would form part of the broader Point Tupper Energy Hub and complement its clean-energy projects across Nova Scotia with its windfarms and green hydrogen plant.

Claire Parsons of EverWind says any development at Point Tupper would be designed to protect ratepayers, water resources and the environment, while also covering the energy and infrastructure costs created by the project.

This comes as Premier Tim Houston shared on social media that Nova Scotia is open to conversations about data centres, provided projects meet standards and conditions which benefit the province.

Houston’s position has evolved from comments he made in June, when he said the province was not actively pursuing data centres unless certain conditions were met and major energy projects were further along.

For EverWind, Parsons says the potential data centre does not represent a change in the company’s commitment to its green hydrogen and ammonia plans.

EverWind says a potential data centre would instead complement those plans by strengthening the energy and infrastructure platform at Point Tupper and potentially attracting new industries to the area.

The company says those industries could create jobs and contribute to Nova Scotia’s economic growth.

“EverWind’s project would build on our planned clean energy and infrastructure investment at Point Tupper and support Nova Scotia’s broader energy and economic objectives”, says Parsons

At this stage, EverWind is describing the data centre as an opportunity being explored, rather than announcing an approved project or providing specific development details.
