A ceremony will be held Monday morning to mark the official renaming of a popular park in the city’s south end.
District 7 Councillor Waye Mason Tweeting the details, saying the event will be held at 11 a.m. on National Indigenous Peoples Day.
The former Cornwallis Park at South and Barrington will be named “Peace and Friendship Park.”
Good morning! It’s National Indigenous Peoples Day and at 11am there will be a ceremony naming the park at South and Barrington “Peace and Friendship Park”, to honour the Treaties with the Mi’kmaw and the recommendation of the Cornwallis Task Force. We are all treaty people.

Mason says it’s to honour the treaties between the Mi’kmaq and the British Crown and the recommendation of the Cornwallis Task Force.
Halifax city council voted to change the name earlier this month as part of efforts to shift away from using “Edward Cornwallis,” the name of the city’s controversial founder, on landmarks and streets.
Cornwallis issued two so-called scalping proclamations after he arrived in Halifax in 1749. He offered a bounty to anyone who killed Mi’kmaw men, women, and children.
A statue of Cornwallis was removed from the park in 2018.
