With concerns running high, there will be another public meeting at a later date, on the pallet shelters coming to Lower Sackville.
Jim Gunn from Beacon House says it’s to ‘constructively address’ and ease the level of concerns from community members.
The Beacon House is a 24-bed shelter, open 24/7, in the former Elizabethan Catholic Church and already has eight micro-shelters on its property.
Nineteen pallets are slated for the parking lot over the next couple of weeks in an expansion, to help combat homelessness in HRM.
To provide information to the public and have questions answered, Thursday night’s meeting at the Kinsmen Community Centre on Metropolitan Avenue was packed.
There were more than 170 people in attendance and a line up out the door.
Residents say the pallets are a risk to the public, specifically with the proximity to the local junior high school and skate park.
A petition circulating online against the pallet shelters has over 1,000 signatures.
It says if their concerns are ignored, they are willing to go to the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia.
The HRM has ordered evictions from five tent encampments by February 26th, including the ballfield on Cobequid Rd.
