Halifax Water looking for approval to have an 18.1% rate hike

Halifax Water has submitted a new rate adjustment to the regulatory board, that would see another hike to your bill.

The utility says it’s asking for an increase of 18.1 per cent for 2026, which would be 12.1 per cent this month and 6 per cent in April.

Halifax Water says it needed to make a calculation adjustment that added another 0.5 per cent on to the proposal it submitted a few weeks ago.

This after the board shut down their first proposal of a hike of about 35 per cent in December calling it rate shock.

In a statement Friday afternoon, CEO Kenda MacKenzie says they apologize to the board and their customers and thank them for their patience.

“Halifax Water is committed to being open and transparent,” says MacKenzie.
