Flames reached between 1o and 12 feet high at a recycling plant in Burnside on Monday.
Fire crews were called to the zero-to-100 block of Simmons Drive at about 1:45 p.m., according to Halifax Fire Chief Dave Meldrum.
Meldrum says recycling fires are challenging, when you have to get at the material beneath a pile of metal. Some of the operators at the plant helped rip open some materials with excavation equipment “to get them good and wet,” says Meldrum.
Firefighters got the fire under control at about 2:30 p.m.
No one was injured.
This type of fire can happen at metal recycling facilities that deal with car parts and other scrap metals piled outdoors, he says.
There are two recycling facilities in that area of Simmonds Drive: Burnside Recycling and American Iron and Metal Recycling.
A worker at Burnside Recycling confirmed over the phone that the fire was at their facility.
Burnside Recycling deals with beverage containers, electronics, paint, some textiles and metals, including car batteries, copper, brass, aluminum and steel, according to their website.
