On April 12, 1980 Terry Fox dipped the toe of his running shoe in the Atlantic Ocean near St. John’s, Newfoundland and began his quest to run across Canada.
The above photo is me at the Terry Fox statue in St. John’s.
Terry was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) in his right leg in 1977 and had his leg amputated above the knee.
While in hospital, he was so overcome by the suffering of other cancer patients that he decided to run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
He had been inspired by the story of another amputee Dick Traum who had run in the New York Marathon.
To date, over $850 million has been raised for cancer research in Terry’s name through the annual Terry Fox Run, held across Canada and around the world. Terry would be impressed.
The Halifax Terry Fox run will be held on Sunday, September 15th.

Our son Trent is a cancer survivor of a Wilms tumour (children’s kidney cancer), so we will see you there.
