UPDATED: Emergency alert ends in Sydney, suspects remain at large

An emergency alert in Sydney and the surrounding area has been lifted.

It was issued Saturday morning after a home invasion and shooting in Sydney.

The alert was cancelled at 2 p.m. Saturday.

According to the notice, police are treating the incident as an isolated incident and believe there is no further risk to the public.

Cape Breton Regional Police continue to search for three suspects.

As of 1:45 p.m., they had cleared the Woodbine Road and Marion Bridge area.

“Police continue to investigate, and attempt to locate the suspects, but can confirm this was not a random incident and that the persons involved are all known to each other,” a statement from CBRP said.

An earlier release from CBRP said the victim of the shooting arrived at Cape Breton Regional Hospital around 7:30 a.m. with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police spoke with the 30-year-old man and confirmed the incident happened in the 100-200 block of Alexandra Street early Saturday.

According to police, three males wearing masks forced their way into a residence, shot the victim and fled the area in a vehicle believed to be a Toyota Camry.

Police located the vehicle in the Woodbine Road area in Marion Bridge.

Officers are searching for the suspects, who they believe fled on foot.

The Major Crime and Forensic Identification Units are investigating the incident and continue to process the scene at the Alexandra Street residence.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Cape Breton Regional Police at 902-563-5151 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
