On-ramp to Macdonald bridge now open after encampment fire

The on-ramp from Barrington Street to the Macdonald bridge is now open after it was closed due to an encampment fire.

Halifax Harbour Bridges says the on-ramp is damaged and inspections are underway.

Firefighters responded to the fire at an encampment on Barrington Street early Tuesday morning, near the ramp to the MacDonald Bridge.

Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency received calls shortly after 6:00 a.m. about smoke, flames, and sounds of explosions, possibly from propane cylinders or other materials.

Crews arrived shortly after and quickly brought the fire under control.

There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire has not been determined.

Firefighters cleared the scene after ensuring the area was safe, leaving it in the control of the bridge commission.
