Communities around Halifax are mourning the death of a civil engineering professor at Dalhousie University who died after he crashed into a pickup truck door while cycling.
Police say around 1 p.m., July 17, a 71-year-old man was hit by the door on Strawberry Hill Street, then later died in hospital.
According to the Moroccan society of Nova Scotia, the man was Dr. Nouman Ali, a “respected” professor who “dedicated his life to education, mentorship and service.”
The society says he was admired for his contributions to the Muslim community, growth of Islamic centres and his “unwavering” commitment to humanitarian causes.
“Dr. Nouman Ali was a valued friend of our community, and his kindness, generosity and dedication will be remembered by many of us.”
The Halifax Cycling Coalition has also paid tribute and say they are “deeply saddened” to learn of the death of a member of their community.
“Dr. Ali was a respected professor at Dalhousie University and, by all accounts, a generous and devoted member of his community, says the coalition.
They say their thoughts are with his friends, family and students.
“Every person who rides a bike in this city deserves to get home safely. We extend our deepest condolences to all who knew and loved him.”
