A nearly unanimous vote to pause the plan for the long-vacant Halifax Memorial Library.
In July of 2024 council decided to hire a consultant to figure out what to do with the building, including turning the site into a park.
The issue was brought back to Council, Tuesday afternoon, to find a viable option for the building through a limited-time Expression of Interest.
Councillor Sam Austin suggested they push on the brakes to give the public a chance to speak on the matter.
“If we pause for six months and do a one last…this is your last chance world…does anyone out there have a use for this building that’s going to work,” said Austin.
The motion was amended to pause the Expression of Interest; however Mayor Andy Fillmore was against deferring the project any longer.
“An entire park is something we could decide to do today,” said Fillmore. “We could ask the staff to start planning a park. We could get a park in a couple of years. We could break out of this wheel spinning we’ve been in for ten or 12 years now.”
The vote was 15-1.
