Halifax has a new fire chief.
The city says after a nationwide search, Deryn Rizzi will be chief of Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency (HRFE), August 17. HRM believes she is the first woman to assume the role.
She will be taking over from Acting Chief Dave Meldrum who has held the position since 2025.
Mayor Andy Fillmore congratulates Chief Rizzi and welcomes her.
“With significant experience leading complex fire and emergency organizations, and a strong track record of operational excellence, she brings the expertise to lead HRFE through a period of continued growth while maintaining the high standard of public safety and emergency services,” says Fillmore.
Chief Rizzi began her firefighting career in Vaughan, Ontario, rising through the ranks to serve as chief.
She has also served as chief in Mississauga, Ontario, and most recently as chief and director at Toronto Pearson International Airport.
Chief Rizzie has received the Kings Charles III Coronation Medal in 2024 for contributions to public service and holds a PhD and master’s degree in Disaster and Emergency Management from York University.
“I am honoured to join Halifax Regional Fire & Emergency and to serve alongside such a dedicated and respected team,” says Chief Rizzie.
Fire union welcomes Rizzi
Halifax Professional Fire Fighters congratulate Rizzi on her position and look forward to working with her.
“As we continue advocating for the resources, staffing, training, and support necessary to provide the highest level of service to the residents of the Halifax Regional Municipality,” says the union in a social media post.
HRFE serves more than 500,000 in HRM with 51 fire stations and more than 1,000 career and volunteer firefighters.
