Herring Cove Community Centre gets $450K from N.S. for green upgrades

A community centre in Herring Cove has received a financial boost from Nova Scotia for green upgrades.

The province says the $453,328 went to the Herring Cove Community Association for solar panels as well as other upgrades, including a state-of-the-art heat pump to lower the power bill.

The savings are intended to be reinvested back into services and programs.

Education Minister Brendan Maguire, made the announcement on behalf of Environment Minister Tim Halman over the weekend.

Maguire says that community centres are the ‘heartbeat’ of communities.

“They bring people together for events and meals and health and wellness activities, while providing refuge and shelter during emergency events,” says Maguire.

The center also hosts a farmers’ market and has a commercial kitchen for local bakers and food entrepreneurs.
