Fillmore will be Halifax’s new mayor

Former Liberal MP Andy Fillmore is going to be mayor of Halifax.

The 58-year-old was first elected as an MP in 2015 but resigned his seat in September to take a shot at the top political job in HRM. Fillmore’s background before jumping into politics was in urban planning and design.

His message during the campaign was to take control of our future.

Fillmore garnered just over 42% of the vote, about 22,000 more than his closest rival, Waye Mason.

Mason and fellow councilor Pam Lovelace stepped up to try to replace Mike Savage but even if you combined their vote totals it would not have been enough to knock off Fillmore.

Mayor

  • Andy Fillmore – 52,396
  • Waye Mason – 30904
  • Pam Lovelace – 19727
  • Jim Hoskins – 7219
  • Daryll Johnson – 4664

A number of incumbents cruised to victory but there will be a handful of new faces around the HRM council table.

Tony Mancini, Sam Austin, Cathy Deagle Gammon, Becky Kent, Trish Purdy, and Patty Cuttell will all be returning to council.

Iona Stoddard lost her district in Clayton Park to Janet Steele, a former Cobequid Regional Health Board Member, and active in the rowing community.

Paul Russell, the councilor for Sackville–Beaver Bank lost a close race to Billy Gillis, while incumbent Shawn Cleary just squeaked past Tonya Malay.

In Bedford, Jean St-Amand beat out five other candidates to win District 16. District 13 had six people vying for a seat on council and it was software developer Nancy Hartling who came out on top.

John A. Young, a retired public servant, easily captured District 14.
