A Lunenburg taxi company that is the middle of a public dispute with the Town, will keep its business open after all.
“We’ll be moving away from general taxi work and focusing on pre-booked intertown trips, long-distance travel, and airport transfers,” says SaltWind Transportation in a statement on social media, Saturday.
Those who live in Mahone Bay, Riverport, MODL and Western Shore will continue with business as usual. Saltwind says, they are able to accept rides which start and end in Lunenburg but can’t accept rides that start and end within the town limits.
“We understand that this will have a direct impact on tourism service workers, tourists and businesses within the Town,” says SaltWind who encourage residents to voice concerns to Lunenburg.
On Thursday, SaltWind Transportation announced it would be closing permanently, July 16, after a statement from the Town that claimed a driver from the company was operating without a license earlier that day.
CAO of Lunenburg Paul Nopper claimed that when the Town contacted the owner to discuss the situation, he became confrontational and resigned his taxi license.
SaltWind called the Town’s statement slander.
There has been an ongoing dispute between SaltWind Transportation and the Town of Lunenburg since last month.
Owner, Simon Gordon claimed Mayor Jamie Myra and members of his group used inappropriate behavior while intoxicated during a late-night pick-up June 12 and 13.
Myra has maintained that he has a much different version of events. Council says it does not have legal power to take action over the matter.
Now, SaltWind is seeking legal advice of its own to review the Town’s taxi bylaws, focusing on how they apply to transportation companies that comply with provincial standards but are not registered with Lunenburg.
The taxi service says they will also have legal counsel on what they refer to as “false and disparaging statements”.
