N.S. funds St. FX research aimed at reducing landfill emissions

Nova Scotia is investing nearly $250,000 in a project aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions from landfills across the province.

St. Francis Xavier University has received $242,060 through the Sustainable Communities Challenge Fund to study methane emissions at Nova Scotia’s largest landfills. Researchers will measure emissions and identify opportunities to capture methane before it enters the atmosphere.

The research team will also examine methane recovery systems already being used elsewhere in Canada and around the world to determine whether similar approaches could work in Nova Scotia.

Michelle Thompson, Minister of Health and Wellness and MLA for Antigonish, says universities are centres of innovation and that partnerships with researchers are key to finding creative climate solutions.

Government officials say the project’s findings could help municipalities reduce landfill emissions, generate renewable energy from captured methane and support a cleaner, more sustainable future. The announcement comes as the province’s latest progress report shows Nova Scotia remains on track to meet its legislated greenhouse gas reduction targets.
