Nova Scotia’s police watchdog is investigating after an RCMP officer shot a man in Chelsea.
Lunenburg District RCMP say officers responded around 9 a.m. Thursday to a report of a person in possession of a weapon on Highway 210 near Chelsea.
Police say the man was linked to an ongoing investigation from the previous day involving a suspicious person who was possibly armed.
He was also the subject of an Alert Ready emergency alert issued Wednesday evening in Lunenburg and Queens counties.
During Thursday morning’s response, RCMP say an officer discharged their service weapon.
The man suffered injuries consistent with a gunshot wound.
RCMP say officers provided first aid at the scene.
No other injuries were reported.
The incident has been referred to the Serious Incident Response Team, known as SiRT.
SiRT says it was contacted by RCMP Thursday morning and immediately took over the investigation.
The agency investigates serious incidents involving police in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, including deaths, serious injuries and matters of public interest.
RCMP say the matter is now being investigated by SiRT and they will not release further details.
Earlier Thursday, Highway 210 was closed between Old Chelsea Road and Waterloo Road while officers remained on scene.
RCMP had previously said there was no risk to the public.
