The premier of Nova Scotia says the motion on Dartmouth Cove that Halifax Council voted ahead, is rather ambiguous and needs a second look.
If approved, the motion would change bylaw amendments to restrict water lot development and infilling in the ocean space but needs provincial approval first.
Tim Houston told reporters it needs further review from the minister of municipal affairs.
“It’s not actually clear. I could guess at what certain members of Council want to say but you shouldn’t have to guess when there’s so much ambiguity there,” said Houston.
In addition to that, Houston added, there is a “real concern” over the jurisdictional approach.
“The federal government is going through a scientific, very detailed process. Whereas the process that HRM seems to be, is very political,” explained Houston.
Dartmouth Cove has been a hot button topic in the community for years.
Atlantic Road and Construction has applied to infill that part of the harbour but has to get federal approval first.
Transport Canada approved the project, rescinded it last June, but provided an amended approval just last week.
The Department of Oceans and Fisheries also needs to give the thumbs up before any action can be taken.
