Province rejects Halifax regional plan amendments

The province has rejected Halifax’s updated regional plan.

Halifax council voted to submit the updated plan for growth in June.

In a letter to Mayor Andy Fillmore, Municipal Affairs minister John Lohr says the document had many proposals clearly intended to impede housing.

Lohr says that includes changing wetland setbacks, requiring EV-ready parking spaces and zoning issues.

He says they’re happy to work with Halifax council to review policies and adopt a more practical, citizen focused plan.

In a news release, the municipality says staff will re-engage with the province to look at next steps.
