SMU Huskies fall to UQTR Patriotes in USports final overtime loss

The Saint Mary’s University Huskies men’s hockey team came short of the USports Gold Medal Sunday afternoon in Halifax.

An overtime loss to the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières Patriotes marked 3-2 as the final score at the Scotiabank Centre.

According to USports, the first period began with a quick goal from Jake Uberti two minutes in that put the Huskies up 1-0. The remainder of the period was quiet, as both goalies brick walled the offense.

Nearly seven minutes into the second period, Pier-Olivier Roy scored on a scramble in front of SMU’s net. The Huskies quickly responded with a goal by Ben Allison, to put SMU back on top 2-1.

Late in the second period, Charles Beaudoin tapped in a goal after a pass from Felix Lafrance that put the puck within inches of the net, tying the score at 2-2.

The third period was silent, as SMU and UQTR went 0 for 11 and 0 for 7 on shots, respectively, thanks to defense from SMU goalie Marcus Vandenberg and UQTR goalie William Grimard.

Overtime ran for 14 tense minutes until Conor Frenette won a faceoff in SMU’s end. The puck ended up in front of Lafrance for the winning wrist-shot goal from the blue line.
