A wind turbine caught fire in West Pubnico on the evening of July 21.
According to Devin d’Entremont of the West Pubnico Fire Department, firefighters arrived on the scene shortly after 9 p.m. and fought the blaze until nearly 1 a.m..
The cause of the fire is currently unknown, and d’Entremont said he’s unsure if there are further threats of the turbine catching or spreading fire. He said they had someone stationed at the windmill overnight to monitor the situation as there was still the potential of flare ups.
“At this moment, I don’t know, but that’s where I’m headed right now to see,” said d’Entremont. “For the public, stay away from the area because there is loose debris, and falling debris could be a safety concern.”
D’Entremont said he would be reaching out to the owners of the wind farm to coordinate an investigation of how the fire started.
The wind farm is owned by NextEra Energy Canada, and according to multiple sources had a similar fire that destroyed another wind turbine in 2019.
