Today Is the Anniversary of the Swiss Air Crash At Peggy’s Cove

24 years ago today the Swiss Air disaster happened off Peggy’s Cove. It seems like yesterday when we got up in the morning and turned on the TV to see Steve Murphy and Ron Kronstein on. You knew when the two main news anchors of then ATV and ASN were on, that something major must have happened. Swissair Flight 111 was a flight from John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, heading to Cointrin Airport in Geneva, Switzerland. We soon learned that the Swiss Air plane crash claimed all passengers on board, taking 229 lives, 215 passengers and 14 crew members. The recovery mission took months. Memorial monuments are set up just before Peggy’s Cove and also over by Bayswater Beach to remember those lost in one of the biggest tragedies to affect our province. Every time I hear a plane fly over our place, especially at night, I cannot help but think of this day, 24 years ago. -Ian
