CUPE Local 5047 school support workers continue fighting for fair wages on the picket lines.
In a video posted to their Facebook page, President Chris Melanson tells Premier Tim Houston, he’s afraid the province is trying to ‘starve them out.’
“All we do is give, but we can’t give from an empty pot…and… we truly need those conversations to start back up,” Melanson said.
He added they understand the premier is dealing with very important issues, like the wildfires, but in order to end the strike, they have to be talking.
Melanson said it’s not about greed, it’s not about locals and it’s not about breaking something that was achieved, but they truly need those conversations to start back up.
Meantime, Houston said 64% of union members were satisfied with the original proposal, and what was important to him was respecting the ask for wage parity.
The Halifax area was one out of eight regions that did not accept the proposal.
More than 1,800 school support workers walked out May 10.
