Al Hollingsworth was honoured at a Celebration of Life at the Halifax Forum Civic Room on Tuesday.
I attended with many media friends.
Al, from Lower Sackville, Nova Scotia served in the Canadian Armed Forces and for decades was a major figure in the local sports scene, along with being involved with local newspapers and radio.
It was neat that the service was held right next door to the Halifax Forum, so during the service we could hear the referee whistles at a hockey game being played next door.
I worked with Al in the late 1980’s here in Halifax radio where he hosted a Country music show by bringing in his milk crates full of his own records.
It was then when I met Al’s son, Paul Hollingsworth who was just starting out in the media business as a radio traffic reporter.
Paul is now a fixture at CTV plus fills in on TSN and did a great job of his Dad’s eulogy yesterday.
The who’s who of local sports were there including Bruce Rainnie, who hosted the ceremony, NHL Coach of the Winnipeg Jets Rick Bowness, former Halifax Mooseheads play-by-play announcer John Moore, Jim Bottomley, CTV’s Steve Murphy, Rick Grant, as well as former Nova Scotia Premier Stephen MacNeil. I said to him “I should’ve worn my ‘Stay The Blazes Home’ t-shirt.”
