Ground Hog Day Weekend Snow Storm Totals

Many of us are still mad at Shubenacadie Sam for her prediction of an early Spring back on Friday!

Lucy the Lobster got it right down in Barrington predicting six more weeks of winter after seeing her shadow.

Some of the unofficial snowfall totals in Nova Scotia are:

40 to 53 cms in Halifax

85 cms at Halifax Stanfield International Airport

45 cms in Truro

66 in Pictou County

27 in Wolfville and Bridgewater

The most is the record breaking snowfall in the Sydney area of Cape Breton with 91 to 150 cms and even more.

Others include Louisbourg 109 cms and Ingonish with 98 cms .

When you think about it, this is a winter’s worth of snow over a weekend, the most in Nova scotia since “White Juan” that will mark it’s 20th anniversary this February 19th.

(Above: “White Juan” pictures from Ian’s place in Timberlea on February 19, 2004. “White Juan” dumped 95 centimeters of snow on Halifax, one of the biggest blizzards ever to hit the Maritimes up until now.)

This isn’t the first Ground Hog storm that hit us hard, many recall the Groundhog Day Gale that was a sever winter storm that hit the province on February 2nd in 1976 that delivered 56 inches or 140 cms of the white stuff.

Some of the 2024 storms nicknames include: Snowmageddon, Snowpocalypse and Shubenacadie Slam!

In my homeland of Big Bras d’Or, the main road has been shut down, that’s never happened before!

Extra equipment is being sent in from various area like New Brunswick to assist in the clean up.

Schools on The Cape are closed at least until Wednesday as many side roads and streets are impassable.

My Aunt Kay Robinson in Englishtown, who’s 94, has never seen this amount of snow in her lifetime.

Stay safe Cape Breton!
