It’s official.
Lunenburg West MLA Becky Druhan has entered the race to become the leader of the provincial Liberal party.
That means a woman will lead the party for the first time in its history. Her only opponent is Deputy Warden of Richmon County, Amanda Mombourquette.
“I love Nova Scotia. But life here is harder than it needs to be and Nova Scotians deserve better,” says Druhan in a statement. “I believe Nova Scotia can be a province where every community is healthy, vibrant, and full of opportunity.”
Druhan was a member of the PC caucus. She served as education minister and justice minister under Premier Tim Houston’s leadership until she left in October 2025, to become an independent MLA.
She joined the Liberals in May alongside Interim Liberal Leader Iain Rankin and MLA Derek Mombourquette. The party was reduced to two seats after the 2024 provincial election and has remained that way since.
Former leader Zach Churchill resigned after losing his own seat in that election.
Druhan says she’s proud to be a member of the Liberal team.
“I’m running to lead because I know that together we can build a party that earns trust, offers hope and is ready to govern.”
Voting for the leadership will run from November 16 to 21 when the winner is announced.
