Dave Chapelle’s latest and last Netflix special, The Closer, has been surrounded by controversy (as most of his specials have been) and he begins the special saying he doesn’t believe in cancel culture and that he doesn’t care if he gets dragged on Twitter because it’s not a real place but Netflix is a real place and many employees are on strike.
Like the last couple of specials he’s done, he talks a lot about the Trans community. This time around he may have gone too far. He says things like “gender is a fact” and talks about his friend, Daphne, who chose to end her life.
Netflix employees and activists started to strike at the company’s Los Angeles headquarters yesterday, in a reputational blow for the company. Ted Sarandos, Netflix’s co-CEO, sent an email last week to roughly 150 senior officials defending the segment, noting the importance of Chappelle to the company. “Chappelle is one of the hottest comedians today and we have a long-standing contract with him,” he said.
Several celebrities are lending their support to Netflix employees who have recently spoken out against Dave Chappelle’s controversial new comedy special, in which he makes remarks about the transgender community.
