Nova Scotia’s Tree For Boston Comes Down Wednesday

Nova Scotia’s Tree for Boston will be cut down tomorrow, Wednesday, November 20th, up in Antigonish County.

This year’s tree is 13.7 meters or 44 feet high and is being donated by Liz and Hugh Ryan who planted the sapling thirty years ago.

The tree cutting ceremony is open to the public and will that place Wednesday morning at Mattie Settlement.

The annual event will begin with a smudging ceremony led by Trevor Gould of Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation.

The tree for Boston is Nova Scotia’s “thank you” to Boston for their help after the Halifax Explosion on December 6th, 1917, when two ships collided in Halifax harbour killing over 2000 people and injuring many more.

Since 1971, we’ve been sending the tree to Beantown that’ll be lit up on the Boston Common on Thursday, December 5th.
