Disney’s live-action remake of Moana is now playing in theatres across North America.
The film features a new Moana, Catherine Laga’aia, while original voice actor Dwayne Johnson returns as Maui.
Adapting the 2016 animated hit, the film follows Moana as she ventures into the ocean when she hears her calling. Along the way, she bumps into the notorious demigod Maui as they work together to “restore prosperity to her people.” Of course, you can’t forget about the pig and chicken joining them for the ride.
What’s surprising is that Dwayne Johnson (aka “The Rock”) produced the film alongside Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, Lin-Manuel Miranda, with Thomas Kail directing.
There seems to be a mix of opinion on the film, with Variety calling it the “first Disney live-action remake that works 100%,” versus CBC calling it “an outright disrespect of the medium it’s adapting.” There’s no right or wrong when it comes to movies, and since every opinion is valid, you’ll have to be the ultimate judge.
I’ve personally never been a huge fan of Disney live-action remakes (I think the originals are ten times better), but there are a few that I enjoyed. To name just two: Cinderella and Cruella are movies that I’d watch more than once.
