On the first day of each month you are supposed to say RABBITS
or RABBITS RABBITS RABBITS
OR WHITE RABBITS
And, honestly, I have no idea why.
I have seen some sources say it goes back to the 15th century, but according to Wikipedia it goes back to 1909:
My two daughters are in the habit of saying “Rabbits!” on the first day of each month. The word must be spoken aloud and be the first word said in the month. It brings luck for that month. Other children, I find, use the same formula.
Regardless, the outcome is the same: You say rabbits FIRST THING IN THE MORNING, and you have good fortune for the rest of the month. Otherwise, bad news bears for you, I’m sorry to say.
However, there are some ways that you can supposedly reverse the curse:
Say “Tibbar Tibbar” as soon as you realise you forgot. As that is “Rabbit” backwards, it is a literal reversal of your bad luck!
Say “Black Rabbit” (or “Brown Rabbit”) right before you fall asleep on the first night of the month.
And, if all else fails, I’ve also read that you can wake up on the second day of the month and immediately say “Moose, Moose!” before speaking any other words.
Does it work???
It can’t hurt.
