It was ten years ago today your Halifax Mooseheads won their first Memorial Cup!

The Herd beat the Portland Winterhawks 6-4 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan with Cole Harbour’s Nathan MacKinnon scoring a hat-trick.

Nate also won tournament MVP.

We were watching it at home and my oldest son Drake thought I was going to take “the big one” as the seconds counted down in the 3rd period. Yes, there were a couple of happy tears.

It was a special time for Halifax to be the home of the City of Champions as the Mooseheads also won the QMJHL President Cup that year too with the parade that later followed on May 28th that ended at Grand Parade with a few thousand Moosemaniacs there to celebrate with the Moose.

Halifax hosted the Memorial Cup four years ago this week in 2019 when several alumni were in town to celebrate like Nate, Jonathan Drouin, Alex Tanguay, Jody Shelly and more.

Tonight, the 2023 Memorial Cup begins in Kamloops, British Columbia with the host Kamloops Blazers facing the QMJHL Champions Patrick Roy and the Quebec Remparts who the Mooseheads took to 6 games in the Q League Finals last Sunday.

Good luck to the Remparts representing the QMJHL.
