The Swiss Air Crash Was 27 Years Ago Tonight

Twenty-seven years ago tonight Swissair Flight 111 crashed at the entrance of St. Margaret’s Bay off Peggy’s Cove on a flight from New York City to Geneva, Switzerland. All 229 passengers and crew were killed. I can remember waking up the next morning turning on the TV and seeing news anchors Steve Murphy and Ron Kronstein on, and I knew something major must have happened. Out where we live in Hubley, when I hear a plane go over the house around 10 o’clock at night, I can’t help but think of those we lost. The cause was wiring from a newly installed entertainment system. The Swiss Air Memorials are located at Peggy’s Cove and at Bayswater honouring those that died on this date in 1998. At Hot Country 1035 our thoughts are with all the loved ones, the first responders, and community members who were affected by this tragedy on a somber date in Nova Scotia history. -Ian Credits: Ian Robinson Photo
