Where to NOT go on a first date

There is a list going around social media that is comprised of just about any place you would go to for a first date, except it’s actually a list of where NOT to take someone on a first date. Some of the spots included definitely don’t deserve to be on the initial list, so here is a revised Halifax edition:
  1. Boston pizza
  2. Saltys
  3. The Dome
  4. Toothy Moose
  5. The Gym
  6. Church
  7. A Mooseheads game: opt for a wanderers game
  8. Family functions
  9. Long Drives
  10. Your house
  11. Fast Food
  12. Peggys Cove for storm watching
  13. Woodside beverage room
  14. Gus’ pub VLT room
  15. A night out of drinking
  16. The movies
  17. Any Karaoke Night
Most of these places are perfectly acceptable as second or third date ideas, just not first. If you’re at a loss as to where you SHOULD take your partner out to get to know them better, there is a list for you too.

What is the purpose of a first date?

You’ve already gotten over the awkward ask. Now it’s time to get down to brass tacks and see if you and the prospective partner are a good match. It’s not a job interview so consider avoiding extremely formal settings like an extravagant dinner, it’s also a time to get to know each other so you are better off avoiding places that are dark or noisy or include heavy drinking. Here are just a few suggestions:
  1. Coffee – Always a classic and reasonable first date. True Neutral.
  2. Point Pleasant Park – Immerse yourself in nature, get in that hike without having to leave the city.
  3. Dinner (the messier the better) – Go somewhere that isn’t too formal, somewhere you can be comfortable, but also somewhere you can get an upfront experience on whether or not they’re messy or loud while eating.
  4. Discovery Centre – Avoid museums where you might have to be quiet, attractions like the Discovery Centre are involved and inspire fun.
  5. Waterfront – Going for a walk is always a safe bet. There’s food and drink but also a bit of exploring to do.
  6. Fair/exhibition – Ferris Wheel anyone?
  7. Farmers market – Get your errands done while supporting local businesses! Get to know your partner by observing which tables they’re drawn to.
